Ganesh Festival- 2009

Ganpati festivals is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in the state of Maharashtra,India. Initially it was started by Lokmanya Tilak to promote public gathering in pre-independence India. But today it is one of THE massive festivals. If you are in Cities like Mumbai or Pune during this time, you cannot go around the city in a car or a bike...you have to be on foot. Entire City is decorated with lights and many stages build along the roads where in every neighborhood puts in their share of celebration and tries to compete with other neighborhoods for the best decoration of the Ganpati Stage.

There are many big Ganpati names in Pune like Kasba Peth,  Dagdu Sheth, Mandai, Bhau Rangari, Babu Genu...Saras Baug...to name a few..these names matter so much that areas have automatically been named surrounding them. When in Pune, if you want to Visit one of these Ganpati Temples all you need is to give is give them the name. p People from Pune always like to called 'Punekars' and not 'Puneites' ..secondly you never called Pune as Poona, as a piece of warning if you make this mistake in front of a Punekar, you are automatically scored '-1'. To real Punekars, Calling 'Pune' as 'Poona' is more insulting than slapping them. When punekars read this line, they will NOT disagree to this fact.
The best attraction of Pune Ganpati festivl is to roam around the entire City area area on foot  to visit all the neighborhoods and checkout the Ganpati decorations. This is one of the moments when you feel the huge crowd around you.
